Students completing the School of Medicine's primary undergraduate programme are conferred with a Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics (MB BCh BAO). Intercalation is possible during the programme, approved by the School of Medicine on a case-by-case basis.
The 5-year programme comprises 2.5 years of pre-clinical training followed by 2.5 years of clinical training. One clinical year is spent at Regional Academies for Teaching and Research at Sligo, Letterkenny, Mayo and Ballinasloe, with the remainder held at University Hospital Galway.
As of 1 February 2026, the Ministry of Health and Singapore Medical Council added Galway to their list of approved overseas medical schools — graduates are eligible to apply for SMC registration.
